Child support allowances are increasing significantly as of June 1st
Some amendments in the Child Protection Act Implementing Regulation, which were approved by the government, stipulate a significant increase in financial support for the prevention of child abandonment and child reintegration into a family environment, as of June 1, 2023.
According to the amendments, the amount of financial support, as well as the criteria for access to it, will be tied to the poverty line for the relevant year, and not, as is currently the case, to the guaranteed minimum income. The total amount of the one-time assistance for the prevention of abandonment and the one-time assistance for the reintegration of the child into a family environment, as well as for raising a child in relatives and foster families, will be up to twice the amount of the poverty line. This will increase the maximum total assistance amount to BGN 1,008, which is BGN 258 more (more than 34%) than its current amount. The aid will be available up to 6 times a year, not as it is now - up to four times. The one-off aid for preventing abandonment will be available to be paid immediately after the order for its granting is issued. The monthly funds for raising children housed in the families of relatives or foster families will also increase.
The amendments regulate that in the first year of the post-adoption period the visits by a representative of the Social Assistance Directorate to the adoptive family will be monthly, and in the second year - at least once every three months. The provisions concerning the National Information System, maintained by the State Agency for Child Protection, and texts related to the remuneration of the professional foster families, are also clarified.
